ESM is NOT a Company’s Intranet

There are lots of misconceptions about Enterprise Service Management (ESM). ESM does not take ITSM and spreads it throughout the company. It is not a corporate intranet. It is not a human resources system. ESM encompasses more than simply IT and HR service management. It encompasses the whole range of services required to enable workers to do their tasks, including IT, HR, Finance, Legal, Procurement, Compliance, and others.

Enterprise Service Management is implementing IT service management into other divisions of a company or organisation to enhance productivity, effectiveness, and service provision. There are many definitions and many different names for it out there for ESM, such as “outside IT,” “beyond IT,” “taking the IT out of ITSM,” and simply “service management.” In fact, enterprise service management is an approach to service and support, not a tool or technology. It’s aimed at delivering better service outcomes and business results, not simply sharing the corporate ITSM tool across different business services such as HR.

ESM is inspired by the methodical approach of ITSM strategy. In order to serve business demands and boost user happiness, ESM adopts the same objectives as ITSM, namely, boosting efficiency within service design, transition, and efficiency. ESM substantially extends these service management concepts to the rest of the company, extending them to enterprise teams outside of IT.

The coolest definition I like about ESM is the one of Forrester. Forrester defines ESM as “extending IT service management capabilities beyond technology services to address business-centric use cases; managing service demand and supply through a common platform, portal, and service catalogue; and speeding up innovation and workflow automation through PaaS/low-code development tooling.” This definition might, however, confuse you ESM being digital transformation. Well, that is not true. ESM “enables” digital transformation but ESM is NOT Digital Transformation. ESM can help improve and clarify services, remove internal silos, increase efficiency using automation, and streamline control and governance.

Businesses and companies are embracing the ESM strategy all around the world. Fortunately, many ITSM software developers are producing better ESM-enabled solutions, making it more straightforward for business units and IT to coordinate. Look for capabilities like these when selecting ESM tools to help your ESM implementation:

  • Core ITSM features that are cloud-native and provide innovation (such as the integration of DevOps into your service management activities)
  • More assistance for non-IT use cases
  • Machine learning, change management optimisation, self-service technologies, and chatbots are examples of service management intelligence.
  • Customer, business, factory, supplier, workforce and industry workflows
  • Environment, Social, and Governance (ESG) Workflows
  • Mobile compatibility
